important insurance advice
All non US residents travelling to Mexico are advised to take out the zero excess insurance from our insurance partner Allianz Global AssistanceUPDATED INSURANCE ADVICE FOR ALL CUSTOMERS
Renting a car in #Mexico is problematic, so be very careful. Unfortunately Mexico is unique world-wide for imposing a fictitious governmental mandatory insurance requirement on arrival.
Cars can be rented in Mexico for as little as $2 per day, and of course it is impossible to do that unless you intend to make up the rental rates with this "mandatory" over the counter insurance.
It ranges from $10-$30 per day on top of the rental car price, and often the rental car supplier will not release the car, unless you purchase some additional insurance.
We have discovered that these tactics are not so widely used when you rent from a non airport location.
The later your arrive and the more luggage and family members you have the stronger the sales tactics become.
However despite what is said by the local Mexican counter staff, often the insurance provided by your credit card issuer*, or if you purchase the Allianz Travel Insurance online, you are most definitely covered.
So our advice is budget to pay some mandatory insurance on arrival, the cost should be in the order of $10-$20 per day normally.
If you want to be totally sure and most definitely covered, then you may wish to protect yourself against rental car losses or damages with Allianz Travel Insurance, it will be less expensive now than at the car counter.
